I had a heated email discussion with a previous cake customer who wasn't happy with me or my services. She buay song because she was not very clear with the design she wanted, in the end the cake design wasn't to her fancy.. and also because we were about an hour late in delivering the cake (this is our fault, fair and square. we had too many orders and her order took longer than expected. we simply couldn't finish in time. as i say all the time, things go wrong with cakes. we can do it in advance and prevent the mad rush on the day itself however we prefer delivering fresh, made-on-the-spot cakes)
Anyway, a few days after receiving the cake, she sent me a hostile email blaming me for the undesired cake design. I told her, it's her job to make sure she relays accurate information to me. I can only follow her instructions, I cannot read her mind.
She ordered a ROUND cake but linked me a picture of a SQUARE cake. Using common sense thinking she had some too, I assumed she wanted a similar design but in round shape instead because she specifically and consciously chose a round cake. You don't go to a cake shop and ask, "Hello, I want to buy a round cake, but square. Have not?".. Doesn't make right? So I created a similar design to the cake but in round shape.
Dunno whether she's fickle minded or whether she doesn't know the difference between square and round. But I kena scolding from her, she said I "failed to deliver the design" and she also, "if you were going to change the design you should have informed me."
Derp derp.
That aside, she was also angry at us for being late on the day itself. This I can fully understand and admit it's our fault. It's my choice and consequence for choosing to do the cake designs on the day itself, many cake shops have policies of completing projects at least a few days in advance to ensure nothing goes wrong at the last minute, however there is simply no space for me to store so many cakes, thus they have to go on the day itself.
She claimed my customer service sucks because I take 2 days to reply her on average and because I did not apologize for being late that day.
I told her, yes, it's true, we are apologize for not apologizing on the day of delivery as it was a mad rush and we regrettably forgot about basic courtesy. I also told her that if it means anything, I am now apologizing for being late.
BUT we cannot be blamed for taking 2 days to reply her email, or worse, her own mix up when it came to choosing a square or round design!!!! I don't understand why people get so pissed off when I take longer than 24 hours to reply your email. I work as fast as I can, for goodness sake! I don't owe YOU in particular anything. Just because you need a cake doesn't mean I die die have to accept your order? What if I'm sick or too busy? If I don't feel like it, I can not accept anybody's order request just coz I don't like their face if I wanted to. That's the plus point of being your own boss. You work according to your own schedule. Since when did I have a roster saying I must work 9 to 5 and reply all emails within 24 hours???
You know why other bakeries can reply you so fast? They have bakers, delivery personnel, shopfront assistant / marketing manager, cake decorators, all sorts of staff... If I had so many people working under me, obviously things would be more efficient around here.
But no. There's 1 of me, and MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE WAITING FOR THEIR REPLY, everyday. Besides baking, replying emails, I also need time to eat, play, sleep, shit, blog, and do other things right? Where got time to provide you instant response? She said, "I'm a customer too, why should I be treated any differently or wait for 2 days just for your reply?"
MY ANSWER: Because the 100+ other unreplied emails in my inbox are customers too? Don't you get it? If I reply your email on Monday, you take 1 day to reply me on Tuesday, I might only get to read your new email on Thursday because I have to go through 100+ other emails before getting around to yours! I work via chronological order. You want a cake, so do these other people. I have to play fair by replying everyone equally. Not like you are willing to pay more means I give you special treatment?
Nobody is pointing a gun to your head and begging you to buy from ME. There are so many bakeries out there, honestly, if you send in an order and don't receive a reply within your expected time frame, wouldn't a normal smart person just approach another bakery as a back up plan or something? All I can say is, I do as much as I can. If that's not good enough for you, then I cannot help it, you are welcome to approach more established bakeries. As long as you haven't paid up, I do not owe you anything, neither am I committed to you.
I am committed to my cake buyers and lovers on the whole, not to anyone PERSONALLY.

Even after attempting to clear things up with this unhappy cake customer, she still buay song la. She rambled on and on in an unpleasant tone, about how displeased she is, and I was planning to brush it all off as I've already said my piece, all until she said THIS:

Me? I am just someone who used to buy Froyo from them that probably won't anymore, because I feel unwelcomed. And of course, offended. This is coming from someone who has worked at Frolick for awhile now, shouldn't there be some sort of credibility to her words?
I have no confirmation from Frolick yet whether this is all true, thus giving me freedom of speech at the moment. It's anyone's guess or say. You are as welcome to share your opinions on this matter as I am entitled to my Delete Comment button, just so you know.
Will Frolick just keep quiet and pretend nothing happened and hope this would go away unresolved? Well I'm not so sure myself, I am not confirm that all of this is true, so I decided to ask Frolick myself.
Since this screenshot is broken up into several segments, I thought I'd just copy and paste what I wrote to them here.
"Dear Frolick, earlier this afternoon, I was rudely informed by one of your staff members that Frolick does not hire FAT people?!? This is a shocking revelation to me and my friends, and everyone I have relayed this information to. They have always had a relatively positive impression of Frolick and it's staff members until now. Since said person I got this information from has been with Frolick for awhile now and is a representative of your company, she probably has insider info?
It all started when I casually told her, hopefully next time I get the chance to work at Frolick. But she shocked me by revealing that Frolick does not hire FAT people. "Just a heads up", she said. I have tweeted about this on Twitter and another of your staff member confirmed this information with me. She continued on to say, "opportunity to join Frolick? let's just say cut down on your calories first."
I am now wondering out loud, is this really true? What is the reasoning behind the unfair bias towards people who are overweight or chubby? Fat people are people with abilities and emotions too, right? Being fat doesn't mean a person cannot become a valuable worker to a company. Fat people should have equal rights when it comes to working. If everyone has this sort of mentality, then unattractive or overweight people are doomed to be jobless. In this case I had better inform everyone that if they're chubby and looking for a job, Frolick is not for them.
I am very disappointed to hear about this as I am dealing with weight problems too like many other people and feel self conscious about it, but never in my life did I expect that I can not even work at a Froyo store I enjoy patronizing because of my looks or physical condition. This hurts my feelings and I'm sure many overweight or chubby people out there (and even skinny people who are reading this) will be outraged by this statement made by a Frolick member herself. It's not like I'm fat until I'm disabled or obese or any less competent a worker / customer. The world is already superficial enough. What about ugly people too?! It's highly correlated and I hope Frolick does not deny people opportunities just based on looks. If fat people are not allowed to work at Frolick, surely we can at least buy from you??? Or still not good enough for you?
My underlying question is, are your workers carelessly slandering the company's name, or is there a good reason for this sort of treatment? I'm not ready to accept just one person's statement yet as I am halfway convinced, however I am keen on expressing my desperate concern. Should it be true, this whole situation and discrimination against chubby people such as myself is ABSURD. If this is not accurate information, perhaps you'd like to ask why this staff member would even say such a thing. I still have the recorded evidence of this conversation between me and your staff if need be. My friends and I will be waiting for your answer.

That girl is such a dumbass seriously! Dragging the COMPANY into her personal insult of you. Yes I have heard rumors that looks do play a huge part in their hiring process but there's NO NEED for her to reaffirm in in such a blatant way? There's always the need for a staff member of any organization to be respectful and professional when discussing company matters and really applies to anyone. From the cleaning Aunty to the CEO. I'm actually a business student doing a second major in PR and this is a pretty interesting real-life example of some concepts I've learnt in class about employees acting irresponsibly wrt the company's reputation and image.
I hope that you get a satisfactory reply from frolick and I hope that they take any necessary action with regards to this! You're a blogger with a large readership and a substantial amount of influence.

Frolick workers have always had the reputation of being snobbish and full of themselves. Of course there are exceptions but most of the time, Frolick workers give the impression that if you don't look as 'good' as them, you aren't worth serving. How does it get to defaming frolick as a whole now? She was your customer, and she has the right to complain, whether you like it or not, isnt it your job to entertain or pay attention as to why she would email you regarding her dissatisfactions about your cake.

I'm a previous customer and to be fair, I understand how frustrated Huizhen was when she was dealing with you. Your emails were dotted with sarcasm and granted, I didn't "retaliate" like Huizhen did because I understood that you were probably dealing with tons of other customers as well and I knew from the "Peggy Heng incident" that you are that type of person with no respect (for people who were remotely rude to you) on your blog. Yes, she did insult you for being fat, but if you were to look at your own response to her and put yourself in her perspective (AKA customer),l wouldn't you be angry with that sort of response as well?
Also, there are tons of blogshops out there who deal with "difficult" customers, but none have ever stooped so low like you to reveal their identities online.
Has Tammy from Ohsofickle revealed the identity of the person who repeatedly cheated her? No, according to her twitter, she merely stopped trusting that person and did extra double checking.

Yes yes.. we all know that you have 10000+ customers waiting. Well, its hard to not have a long queue of customers with the rate you are replying emails regarding shapes of the cakes(LOL).
Regarding the taste of your cake, its understandable that taste is not your main selling point.. but shouldnt you be trying to improve on the taste as well? Instead of improving, you took the "not happy don't buy approach".
If you can't finish the cake on time then just give a later timing?
Buy cake from you still must wait for you?
Regarding the DESIGN of your cake, you could've just ask her for a confirmation instead of using your common sense THINKING(LOL) and assumed the design on your own.
Basically the customer was unhappy with the design, the taste, the timing, the colour, haha i don't even know if there's anything to be satisfied about.. not nice to eat, not nice to see.

If you wanted to blow a situation up for hits, you could've at least picked something worth blowing up. This was a complete low-blow. The initial situation was so insignificant that your blog post, towards the end, became irrelevant and kind of illogical altogether. (hiring based on looks, for certain industries, is well known and makes perfect sense for branding purposes. Don't tell me model agencies and fashion designers are all doing it wrong?)

Firstly I've to say that while I've been reading your blog quite frequently since a few months back, I don't always agree w/ you. That's to be expected though obviously, not everyone would have the same opinions etc.
On one hand I think it was right of you to highlight her unprofessional behavior to her company (shame on her, she's old enough to know better!), on the other hand, I do wish you didn't sink to her level & made things more personal than necessary (apologized for the late delivery & just left it at that instead of responding to her childish provocations)..
True, business-wise you don't have much to lose, however I guess you're still young (you're still a teenager for crying out loud!) & well, even adults make mistakes. I myself will be 21 end of this year, & I've to admit though, I still do make mistakes, of which some I truly regret.

But if you have not enough time to meet the demand, at least try to do something to help improve your business' productivity. Like hire an admin, while you do the baking. Don't just blame it on the customers. Companies with proper business ethics don't do that.

I agree with pretty much certain things you mention in your blog post. However I would like you to calm down and reread your blog post again. I think what the other girl said was unneccessary and childish, not to mention sour grapes above it all. You are definitely a smarter and probably more wordly person. You are your own boss, because you found something you are good at and can do. She hasn't hence she has to contend with working as a waitress. Is it worth it however, to cause someone else to lose their $5 dollar/hr job because she said somethings without thinking and is relatively shallow as a person? just like you she is also trying to survive. No one here expects you to be thin or wants you to be but i think a lot of people reading your blog will expect you to be the better man. As we have all come to like and respect you for the qualities you show when you blog. Being the better man comes with being the boss.. sometimes you just have to let these things go and not judge them (as you have done) because they are a waitress or a road sweeper or whatever. People order from you because you have such nice cakes and a rather quirky personality. You can't control who orders from you and like you said you treat all your customers with respect. So while it is hard and i am sure the situation is desperately unfair to you, but these are the things that are part of the whole package of being your own boss.

honestly i totally agree with you on this. past experiences with girls i know who work at frolick have shown a lot of them to be really proud of their "exclusivity". real turn off...
the thing is their service actually suffers because of this. many of these stick figures serve you with judging and black faces and some of them can be rude
i think if you want to complain, complain to complaint@frolick.com.sg instead of posting it up to their facebook page. it's like would you allow people on your facebook to complain about you on your facebook profile? don't do what you don't want others to do unto you.

Yep sadly frolick only hires skinny and pretty girls. So does many other ice cream/ frozen yogurt stalls like ice cream chef and sogurt. I am a chubby girl myself and because Im a girl, I get offended haha so now I only patronize J.CO, they sell really nice frozen yogurts too :D

I feel that it was really rude of her to say that you do not stand a chance to be hired by Frolick because you are "fat", its not like she is as skinny as a stick either,so why is she discriminating fat people. She implied that you are fat because you eat a lot, at her age, doesn't she know that some people are fat because they might have health problems or have inherited "fat genes"?? To be honest, I feel that you are pretty even without photoshop, so I'm wondering why she stated that she may not be able to recognize your unphotoshopped face. And for the plastic surgery part, I could'nt help but chuckle when I compared both her face and your face(In my opinion, I think you look much better than her).
Anyway, Frolicks is not the only froyo place available in SG, there's one at Scape called Red Mango, its the best that I can recommend:)
However, you should'nt have posted photos of her friends because they probably have nothing to do with it anyway.

Hmm I just discovered your blog today (linked from another, re:hair bubble dye). I was just getting to think how inspirational and entertaining you are.
However, this post didn't leave such a good impression. I admit, it was dumb of her to bring in her employer's name and rep., but I'm disappointed in the degree of your retaliation!
In business, the golden rule is: THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. Word travels fast (and no doubt, you have had a major hand in it, in this case...).
I would rather take this as CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM and use it to improve. I think experiences such as these are actually "valuable" (for lack of a better word) as they show you what you can expect to get. Learn from this. Don't give her the "don't-like-don't-buy" attitude, because that's what puts a lot of people off. Service > Attitude anytime. Can't get by on popularity alone either.
Another thing - by blogging about this, it could most likely hurt your own cake business (which is a pity, because like you said, it's quite an accomplishment for a 19yo). I live in Australia so it's not like I can order cakes from you, but even if I lived in SG, I don't think I'd like to - I wouldn't want to be ridiculed and shamed on your blog just by giving feedback - nice or not.
The only way to improve is through feedback, and like it or not, it's the ones that point out flaws that ultimately set you focusing on those areas to step up your game. Lose the unprofessional mindset.

Yeap there was a newspaper article abt this hiring eye candy thing...well they r being very stupid cuz pretty ppl cn b self absorbed and deliver bad service. I don't think it attracts customers in th first place. What's their problem, even cosmetic shops hire unattractive ppl and I saw overweight ppl writing at etude house. I think you responded in a pretty unprofessional way actually. You could have easily averted the situation and not engage in childish banter by communicating in a wiser way. I mean if I recieved a response like yours I would think that you're service is completely amatuerish. C'mon - you're still new to the business. You can't afford shit like this. Lots of orders? Frolick doesn't taste that great I suppose and I have never tasted their yoghurt before. When I was passing by Frolicks and looking at the menu, those girls just stare at me with no smiles at all. Shouldn't they be more professional by smiling at customers instead? It's very rude and I swear their stares are horrible, making me petrified when I look directly at their eyes, making me lose appetite. Then, I just walked away and decided not to purchase yoghurts anymore. I believe yami yoghurt tastes better with more professional and friendly staff.
Oh seriously, Frolicks have a very bad marketing strategy that is to recruit young pretty girls. So what? We, customers patron yoghurt shop is to taste great yummy yoghurt and is not to see those girls? Can Frolicks understand? Their concept is only trying to attract attentions to guys buying yoghurts. Think about it, females prefer eating yoghurts com[pared to males. Evn my father, brother, cousins don't even like yoghurts..I guess they felt turn off too by looking at why the concept of frolicks turn out this way. Frolicks is like not selling yoghurt at all but is like selling girls..I felt so offended when that girl insulted Jess in this way by claiming she's fat.
Go to USA to see how many yoghurt shops recruit bigger size people? Because in USA, there is an high obesity rate. It's so popular there. Don't worry Jess, I support you as I felt rather rude and discriminating for that particular lady to insult you in this way. She should at least grow up and stop acting as though she is like very 'Pretty', very 'Skinny' ..it doesn't lead her to anywhere because her attitude is so bad.
